An integral part of the Society’s work is to educate children, so that they can better themselves. Education provides a positive and hopeful future, which enlightens minds to cope with life’s rich tapestry of experiences in such an erratic world. Three main Bengali Medium primary schools have been set up by the PSOC. The schools are located in Kaknan, Monsuka and Monaharpur and are built of cement (Kaknan) and bamboo (Monsuka, Monaharpur). Both boys and girls are taught up to class IV, where school supplies, study materials, uniforms and education are provided free of charge. The children, who are taught in a bamboo hut at Monaharpur, in due course, will be studying in their new bi-leveled concrete school (see ‘Future Projects’).
In addition to the above three schools, the PSOC helps those children that attend schools on the roadside, because they have nowhere else to study. Aid is given by providing study materials, clothes and food.
To
assist those who wish to pursue their studies in post-secondary
institutions the PSOC also provides scholarships. Educating the poor by supporting them through primary, secondary and post-secondary education provides them with a greater chance of getting a well-paid job, independence and a brighter future. Such support will pay off in the long run as education is one way of alleviating the problem of ‘being penniless’ - one of the main struggles, that the deprived, face in West Bengal.
